Fabienne Verdier
Fabienne Verdier (born 1962, Paris, France) is a contemporary painter whose work bridges Eastern and Western traditions through a bold and meditative exploration of gesture. After graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse in the 1980s, she received a rare scholarship to study in China, where she trained for nearly a decade under masters of calligraphy and ink painting. This experience profoundly shaped her artistic practice, instilling both discipline and a deep respect for the spiritual dimension of painting.
Verdier’s art is rooted in movement, energy, and the immediacy of mark-making. Working with large, specially designed brushes and experimental techniques, she seeks to capture the vitality of forces that exceed the individual—natural rhythms, the flow of energy, and the resonance between body and space. Her monumental canvases, often created in a performative process, embody both physical intensity and contemplative stillness.
Her paintings are not only dialogues with Chinese calligraphy and abstract expressionism but also reflections on philosophy, music, and science. Collaborations with musicians, composers, and scientists have led her to expand her practice into new territories, exploring the links between sound, vibration, and visual form.
Internationally recognized, Verdier has exhibited at leading institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Fondation Hubert Looser in Zurich, and the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence. Her works are included in major collections worldwide. Through her singular synthesis of tradition and innovation, Fabienne Verdier has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary painting.
