Hervé Van der Straeten

Hervé Van der Straeten was born in 1965. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he first gained recognition in 1985 with his jewelry collections, which met with immediate success.

As an independent designer, he earned international acclaim for his creations in furniture, lighting, and mirrors, which today stand at the heart of his practice. Van der Straeten’s work combines a radical freedom of tone with exceptionally high-quality execution. Hybrid forms, elegance, and purity define his approach. Whether unique pieces or limited editions, his collections are conceived in his own bronze and cabinetmaking workshops, and since 1999 have been presented in his Marais gallery.

An eclectic collaborator, the designer has placed his expertise at the service of major luxury houses: he created Dior’s J’adore perfume bottle, designed the Kiss Kiss lipstick line for Guerlain, developed the Excess collection for the Saint-Louis crystal works, and produced furniture pieces for Roger Vivier boutiques in Paris, London, New York, and Hong Kong.

Among his most prominent clients are leading collectors, international decorators, and the Mobilier National—the official supplier of furniture and decorative objects to the French state since Louis XIV.

Widely acclaimed, Van der Straeten has received numerous prizes and honors. In 2007, the French Ministry of Culture awarded him the label “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant.” In 2008, he was named Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, and since 2012 he has been a member of the Comité Colbert. His work is also exhibited by Galerie Karsten Greve.
